Welcome to Baby Signing Training

home_imageWho are we and what do we do?

We are committed to promoting the benefits of baby signing in order to ensure that all children have the opportunity for development at this very important early age. We are particularly passionate about ensuring that Baby Signing is available to those children who may otherwise have been unable to access its benefits.

All of our staff have extensive experience of baby signing in both a personal and professional capacity; they are always happy to both answer questions and offer advice, not only about our products but also about baby signing in general.

Our programme has been designed by a Cambridge University graduate in Education Studies, who has been signing for over 12 years and who herself currently runs baby signing sessions. Sessions have a strong focus on fun. All contain music, actions and signs. Although our courses contain around 150 of the most useful signs for babies, these are introduced gradually and alongside music and props.

All of our resources are produced using carefully selected British Sign Language Signs, as we are keen to ensure that our sessions are accessible to those with a hearing impairment. However, in reality because where there are a number of different BSL signs to choose from we have always chosen the simplest, there is very little variation between the signs used in our resources and those used in other sign systems such as Makaton.

What are the benefits of signing with babies and toddlers?

It enables babies from as young as six months to communicate their needs effectively, thus reducing frustration. It helps parents and carers to focus on key words, which when accompanied with signs, greatly aid understanding even before children themselves can form the signs.

When used alongside speech it increases the rate at which children develop spoken language, children who sign know how important communication is and are eager to take this on to the next level.

It is a fun way of interacting with babies and toddlers, they will amaze you by how fast they learn and you will realise just how much they know long before they could ever have used speech to tell you.

Why use the resources provided by the Baby Signing Training Company?

All of our resources have been specifically designed for you people who want to teach signing to babies and young children. Specifically:

Our songs and the music which accompany them are unique to us, meaning that they contain useful key words such as nappy, drink, milk, food and more. Perhaps even more importantly they have been tried and tested on both babies and parents to ensure that that as well as being functional they are also great fun.

Facts & Figures

Many people are sceptical about baby signing, however we feel the following statistics speak for themselves:

At 24 months, signing-babies were found to talk on average more like 27- or 28-month-olds. This represents more than a three-month advantage over the non-signing babies.

In addition, the 24-month-old signing babies were putting together significantly longer sentences.

At 36 months the signing-babies on average were talking like 47-month-olds, putting them almost a full year ahead of their average age-mates.

By the age of eight, children who had learned to sign as babies had an average IQ of 114 compared to an IQ of 102 for those that didn't.
